Deschampsia cespitosa 175mm pot size PERENNIAL GRASS

$24.00

Deschampsia is a genus of cool-season grasses, commonly known as hair grass. Here are some horticultural notes on the genus Deschampsia:

Soil and Watering: Deschampsia prefers moist, well-drained soil. It is tolerant of a wide range of soil types, but prefers slightly acidic soils with a pH between 5.5 and 6.5. It does not tolerate drought well, so regular watering may be necessary during dry periods.

Sun Exposure: Deschampsia prefers full sun to partial shade. In hotter climates, it may benefit from some afternoon shade.

Propagation: Deschampsia can be propagated by seed or division. Seeds should be sown in the fall or early spring. Division should be done in the spring or fall.

Plant Care: Deschampsia requires minimal maintenance. It does not require fertilization, but can benefit from a light application of compost in the spring. Deadheading spent flowers is not necessary, as the plant will drop its own seeds.

Blooming: Deschampsia produces delicate, airy flower heads in the summer, which can be tan, brown, or purple. The flowers are attractive to birds and beneficial insects.

Pests and Diseases: Deschampsia is relatively pest and disease-free. It may be susceptible to rust, but this can be prevented by maintaining good air circulation around the plant.

Uses: Deschampsia is often used in meadow and prairie plantings, as well as in naturalistic gardens. It can also be used as a groundcover, especially in moist areas or along the edges of ponds or streams. Its delicate appearance and fine texture make it a good choice for softening the edges of hardscape elements such as walkways or retaining walls.
