Description

Pachysandra is a genus of evergreen groundcover plants in the boxwood family, Buxaceae. The most commonly grown species is Pachysandra terminalis, also known as Japanese Spurge. Here are some horticultural notes on the genus Pachysandra:

Growing conditions: Pachysandra grows best in well-drained soil with a slightly acidic pH (between 5.5 and 6.5). It prefers partial to full shade and is not drought-tolerant, so it needs regular watering in dry conditions.

Planting: Pachysandra is typically propagated by division, although it can also be grown from seed. When planting, be sure to space the plants at least 6 inches apart to allow for growth and avoid overcrowding.

Care: Pachysandra requires little maintenance beyond regular watering and occasional fertilization. It can be pruned to control its spread and prevent it from becoming too invasive. Pachysandra is also susceptible to damage from deer, so protective measures may be necessary in areas with high deer populations.

Uses: Pachysandra is commonly used as a groundcover in shady areas, particularly in woodland gardens and under trees. It is also used in landscape design to create low-maintenance borders and as a substitute for grass in difficult-to-mow areas.

Varieties: There are several different varieties of Pachysandra, including variegated forms such as Pachysandra terminalis ‘Variegata’. These varieties offer different leaf colours and patterns, which can add interest to a garden or landscape.
