Description

Carex is a large genus of plants in the family Cyperaceae, commonly known as sedges. They are widely distributed throughout the world and can be found in a variety of habitats, including wetlands, woodlands, and grasslands. The genus includes over 2,000 species, many of which are popular ornamental plants.

Horticultural notes:

Carex species are popular ornamental plants due to their attractive foliage, which comes in a wide range of colours and textures. They are often used in borders, rock gardens, and containers.

Carex prefers moist, well-drained soil and partial shade, although some species can tolerate full sun or dry conditions.

Carex can be propagated by division, which is best done in spring or fall. The plants should be divided every two to three years to maintain their vigour.

Carex can be prone to a few diseases, including rust and leaf spot. Good cultural practices, such as avoiding overhead watering and removing infected plant material, can help prevent these diseases.

Some popular Carex species include Carex comans (New Zealand Hair Sedge), Carex muskingumensis (Palm Sedge), and Carex oshimensis (Japanese Sedge).
